NEW YORK (AP) - A major ice skating complex planned in the Bronx is getting an assist from a top hockey equipment manufacturer.
The Kingsbridge National Ice Center’s organizers announced Monday that Bauer Hockey has agreed to invest $4 million to help develop the facility. Bauer Hockey is owned by Exeter, New Hampshire-based Performance Sports Group Ltd.
The nine-rink center is expected to open in 2017 and feature hockey, figure skating, speed skating, curling and more. Officials have said it will be the world’s largest indoor ice skating center.
Its CEO is Hockey Hall of Famer and former New York Rangers captain Mark Messier. Supporters also include Olympic figure skating champion Sarah Hughes.
Plans include free after-school tutoring and skating programs. Bauer Hockey intends to help the center introduce the sport to new participants.
