HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (AP) - Ravinia Festival’s accomplished music director plans to step down from his position at the end of the 2015 season.

James Conlon has worked at the Highland Park outdoor music festival since 1977. He took over as music director in 2005.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1qJULi8 ) that Conlon says he is leaving the role to devote himself to other musical and personal projects.

Conlon also serves as music director for the Los Angeles Opera.

Ravinia President and CEO Welz Kaufman highlighted Conlon’s showcase of Mozart’s work, and his leadership in reviving works by composers whose music the Nazi regime suppressed. He says Conlon’s “championing of music has become a worldwide calling card.”

Conlon’s final conducting appearances next summer is expected to include a reprise of favorites from his tenure.
