CUBAN RUM COMING BACK TO US WITH VISITORS

U.S. rum aficionados are abuzz over the possibility of mixing a Cuba Libre with authentic Cuban rum, now that they will be able to bring home liquor distilled in the communist nation. Relaxed limits on what licensed U.S. travelers can bring home mean that Americans will be able to enjoy small quantities of the liquor at home. But, with the embargo still in place, the rum won’t be flooding bars or the market.

PANHANDLE TEEN MAULED IN BEAR ATTACK

A 15-year-old Panhandle girl is recovering in a hospital after being attacked by a bear. Sherry Mann told Panama City television station WMBB that her daughter sustained significant injuries to her legs, back, neck and face.

2 KILLED, 3 HURT IN SARASOTA BAR SHOOTING

Two people died and three others were injured when gunshots were fired inside a Sarasota bar. The shooting happened early Sunday at Kay’s Lounge in North Sarasota. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports more than 100 people were inside the bar when the shooting occurred. But Sarasota County Sheriff’s officials say no one who may have witnessed the shooting has come forward with information.

POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH OF INFANT

Police are investigating the death of a 1-month-old central Florida boy. The Ledger of Lakeland reports Aiken Starks was found unresponsive Sunday at his grandmother’s house by a 10-year-old relative. Police say the child may have been sleeping with several other children ages 3 to 10.

OFFICER’S CAR HITS MOTORCYCLE RIDER

A police officer struck a scooter-style motorcycle, critically injuring the rider. The Florida Highway Patrol says 27-year-old Officer Silvio Portillo was driving his marked patrol car early Sunday when the front of the vehicle hit the back of the motorcycle. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports 39-year-old Andrew McIlvain was thrown off the motorcycle. He wasn’t wearing a helmet. He was taken to a Daytona Beach hospital in critical condition.
