SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The Spokane sheriff’s office issued a statement over the weekend assuring the citizens of Spokane County that deputies are dedicated to upholding and defending the Constitution.

The statement apologized for a deputy who used the term “constitutionalist” to imply that he viewed citizens who uphold the Constitution as a threat.

The sheriff’s office says he should have said “extremist” to refer to people who believe their ideology justifies lawless and violent acts.
