VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - State police are investigating after a man described as suicidal was shot in the hand by a police officer in northern Indiana.

Porter County Sheriff David Lain says the 22-year-old man was taken to Porter Regional Hospital early Tuesday where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

State police say a preliminary investigation shows police were called to a home in an unincorporated area southeast of Valparaiso about 11:40 p.m. Monday about a man threatening suicide. Porter County police said the man was locked in a bedroom basement and put a gun into his mouth. Police say the man was struck by stun gun once then shot in the hand by an officer.

The officer was placed on routine administrative leave. The officer’s name was not immediately released.
