LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - An appeals court has ruled that a 30-year sentence given to a Lake Charles woman convicted of abusing her stepson is excessive.

The American Press reports (http://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) state judge sentenced 32-year-old Jaime Brooks Day to 30 years in prison in December 2013 after a jury found her guilty of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

While the judges of the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal affirmed the conviction, they vacated her sentence.

The boy weighed 38 pounds when he was brought to the hospital as a 9-year-old in 2010.

Day is being held at Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel.

No new sentencing date has been set.
