WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia transportation officials are asking nonprofits to apply for grant money to help them transport people with disabilities.

The grant funds are given to the District by the U.S. Department of Transportation based on a formula that takes into account the number of elderly and disabled people in a given state.

The money goes toward the purchase of wheelchair-accessible vehicles and wheelchair lifts and restraints. It can cover 80 percent of the cost of the vehicle or equipment. The city works with applicants to make sure they are eligible for the program and meet all the requirements.

Applications are due on Feb. 13.
