TIPTON, Ind. (AP) - Police say the driver of car headed south on U.S. 31 lost control, crossed the grassy median and was struck by a semitrailer headed north, killing four people.

State police say a man and woman and a girl and a boy in the car were killed about 8:45 a.m. Friday near Tipton, about 35 miles north of Indianapolis. Police say a third child, a female adolescent, sustained life-threatening injuries and was brought to an Indianapolis hospital by helicopter.

State police say a Jaguar headed south on U.S. 31 lost control and overcorrected, sending the car across the median. Police say the driver of the semitrailer tried to avoid the Jaguar, but struck it on the passenger side.

State police don’t what caused the car to lose control.
