WAVELAND, Miss. (AP) - Marine biologists from Gulfport spent part of their Christmas at Waveland after getting reports that a dead manatee had washed ashore.

The Institute of Marine Mammal Studies told WLOX-TV (http://bit.ly/1vsEm4N ) that it was the second manatee found in Mississippi waters this month.

Biologists say that’s very unusual. Manatees are often seen on the Alabama coast and sometimes farther west in summer, but they generally winter in Florida.

Manatees also spend their summers along the Atlantic Coast - mostly off of Georgia and South Carolina, but occasionally as far north as Massachusetts.

Manatees are an endangered species.
