CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police say an officer shot and injured a person who lunged at the officer with a knife.

A statement from the Chicago Police Department says officers responded to a report of a threatened suicide around 6:40 p.m. Thursday. The statement says when police arrived they encountered a male subject who attacked an officer, striking his protective vest with a knife.

The statement does not give the subject’s age.

Police say when the male “charged a second time,” the officer fired his gun, striking him.

The officer and subject were hospitalized. The officer was in good condition, and the subject was in critical condition.

Police say the knife was recovered and the incident is under investigation.

All questions were directed to the Independent Police Review Authority, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
