DENVER (AP) - Colorado added 56 beer breweries in 2003, bringing the total to 217, the third-highest in the nation.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday (http://tinyurl.com/mskdk32 ) the numbers reflect active breweries with licenses from the federal Alcohol Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, and they include brewpubs. One company might own more than one brewery.

The numbers were compiled by the Beer Institute in Washington.

California had the most breweries, with 508, and Washington state was second with 251. Oregon was fourth with 208.

Nationwide, there were 3,699 active permitted breweries last year.
