LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Redskins name not what needs redress

- - Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Two members of our illustrious Congress, Sen. Maria Cantwell, Washington Democrat, and Rep. Tom Cole, Oklahoma Republican, are trying to get the Washington Redskins to change their team name after 90 years, lest the Indians of North America find the name offensive ("Lawmakers, Redskins spar over team name," Web, Feb. 10).

You would think our public servants would have too many other pressing matters to bother with something like this.

If North American Indian tribes are offended by anything, it is probably the dozens of treaties they signed with the U.S. government — treaties the government subsequently broke — and the appalling state of the government-run reservations, where they were told to go for their own welfare.
