CHICAGO (AP) - Businesses and contractors in Chicago can start applying for permits and licenses from the city through a website.

It’ll save people a trip to City Hall, and the city will save on manpower without having to scan and file thousands of pages of paperwork.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office announced the launch of the online portal Friday. It will roll out in phases.

To start with, people can obtain air pollution control permits. By 2016, the city will expand the portal to allow people to apply and pay for all permits and licenses.

The idea is to streamline the process. Users can submit information and documents online. Once approved, they can print their certificates on the spot without having to leave their businesses.
