PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has joined the board of director of a bus manufacturer.

The Journal Star in Peoria reports Tuesday (http://bit.ly/1gf17lw) that the Illinois native has joined Proterra Inc.LaHood represented central Illinois in Congress for seven terms before President Barack Obama chose him to be transportation secretary. The company is based in South Carolina.

Proterra makes electric transit buses. LaHood says he’s working with the company because there is a need for “dependable, lower cost, more sustainable transit options.”

LaHood also is a senior policy adviser for a law firm and lectures at his alma mater, Bradley University. He also is on the board of the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago and is a senior adviser at the Dirksen Congressional Center in Pekin.
