Former boxing champ Roy Jones running for mayor in Florida

- The Washington Times - Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Former boxing champ Roy Jones Jr. said he's going to take a shot at becoming mayor of his hometown of Pensacola, Fla.

The former Olympian told TMZ Sports that he plans to run at the next election, focusing his platform primarily on education.

"A lot of kids don't have proper leadership at home. I'm willing to try and be that person for them," he said. "I tell the kids, don't fight in the streets. Go into MMA, go into boxing. Do something that someone can be proud of you for."

Mr. Jones said he's gathered 10 times the necessary number of signatures to be eligible for a spot on the ballot and is confident he can win the race.

"I've been opposed my whole life, and I've always won," he told TMZ.

Ashton Hayward is the current mayor of Pensacola and took office in January 2011 as the city's first "strong mayor," which means his role came with more authority and responsibility than those before him.
