DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Officials in Des Moines say recent runoff caused by warmer weather has affected the taste and odor of water.

Des Moines Water Works says extra runoff in the water supply has caused the utility to use more chlorine in its finished product. The change has been going on for three weeks.

The Raccoon and Des Moines rivers, which are both used as water sources, currently have elevated levels of ammonia. Extra chlorine is needed to eliminate the ammonia and maintain adequate disinfection.

The utility says the water is safe to drink and use. The chlorine levels are being monitored to make sure they don’t exceed federal guidelines.

Officials say the situation will improve as the weather stabilizes and runoff levels decrease.
