ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Downtown Alexandria has been chosen as the home of Central Louisiana Technical Community College’s new main campus.

The $21 million-plus campus will replace the college’s current Alexandria campus, located on South MacArthur Drive.

The Town Talk reports (http://townta.lk/MXLAhK ) the Louisiana Community and Technical College System Facilities Corporation chose downtown over a proposal by Louisiana State University of Alexandria. A specific site has not been designated.

“I am excited that the LCTCS Facilities Corporation has made a decision regarding the proposals for our new main campus,” said CLTCC Chancellor Rodney Ellis. “We can now turn our attention to identifying a specific location within the downtown area and putting together an advanced infrastructure, as well as programs that will meet the growing demands of the Central Louisiana workforce.”

The Louisiana Legislature approved $251.6 million for 29 capital projects at technical colleges during its session last year. Included in that was $19 million for CLTCC’s new main campus.

The Facilities Corporation issued a Request for Proposals on November 6, with a deadline to respond by Jan. 21. Its main criteria for sites included visibility; access for commuters; proximity to high population areas of Rapides Parish; ability to accommodate facilities of at least 65,000 square feet with 360 parking spaces, with potential for expansion; utilities service; and availability for quick title transfer.

An advisory team visited LSUA and downtown on Feb. 12 to evaluate potential sites.

The city already has nearly $2.3 million earmarked in its capital budget for the local match required for the community college project.
