NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a rookie New York City police officer was shot and injured by a suspect who was taken into custody.
NYPD Chief of Department Philip Banks says the officer and his partner, also a rookie, saw the suspect and another man enter a bus through the rear doors. They got on the bus and removed the men.
The suspect ran, and then fired at the officers, who both fired back. Officer James Li was hit in both legs.
Civilians on the street gave aid to Li, who was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
Officers chased the suspect to a building, where he was taken into custody. Banks says a gun was recovered.
Both officers graduated from the Police Academy in December.
