WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - The Green Grand Prix is returning to Watkins Glen International.

The 10th annual showcase of motoring technology returns to the famed road course in the Finger Lakes on April 11. The goal of promoter Bob Gillespie is to preach energy independence, reduce greenhouse gases, and educate the public about alternative fuels.

This year’s event will be comprised of a two-stage road rally. The first stage is a 100-mile, fuel-economy event at WGI. The second will be on public roads, with the focus on precision driving, and there will be Electrathon races featuring single-person, high-efficiency electric vehicles with three or four wheels and powered by gel cell battery packs.

Educational seminars and displays by manufacturers and vendors also are part of the activities.

Opening day at the track is April 12.
