A 91-year-old Holocaust survivor died after being hit by a school bus packed with kids in Maryland Wednesday afternoon.
Elia Miranski was using his walker to help cross Columbia Pike at Tech Road in Silver Spring at about 2:20 p.m. when he was struck while crossing the northbound lanes, NBC 4 Washington reported.
He later died at a local hospital.
Fourteen students and two employees from Hammond Middle School in Laurel were on the bus, which was returning from a field trip to the White House. None of them was injured.
Mr. Miranski's family confirmed that he was a Holocaust survivor, NBC reported. He recorded his life story for the Holocaust Memorial Museum just last year.
Workers nearby told a local ABC affiliate that the intersection is particularly dangerous.
"People are getting hit ... accidents here at least monthly," said Trish Baker.
The accident remains under investigation, which includes interviewing the bus driver, 52-year-old Lori Jean Latimer, and taking a look at traffic-signal sequences at the intersection.
Mr. Miranski's neighbor told the station that he will be missed.
"How can a 91-year-old guy cross six or seven lanes by himself? That just doesn't make sense," Mike Bogale said in the report. "I feel like I miss my father."
