NEW LONDON, N.H. (AP) - Budget problems are prompting New London Hospital to cut staff and benefits and delay construction of a new health center in Newport.

Hospital CEO Bruce King told the Valley News (http://bit.ly/1kwzR4S) that officials haven’t decided how many of the hospital’s 600 employees will lose their jobs and which departments will be affected. In the first three months of its fiscal year, the hospital saw a 6 percent drop in patient volume compared to the same period last year, and revenue was down 7 percent.

Officials say other cost-saving measures will include changing staffing at the nursing home, delaying the implementation of an electronic medical record system for outpatient practices and halting spending on travel and education for staff.
