BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Morgan William scored 21 points to lead Shades Valley to the first state championship in school history with a 63-49 victory over Sparkman in the Girls 6A Championship game on Friday night.

William finished the night 17 of 21 from the free throw line while scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter to be named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Teammate Frantisha Tyson also added 16 points for a Shades Valley team that shot 36 of 50 from the free-throw line.

Shades Valley (31-4) trailed Sparkman (33-3) 40-35 heading into the final period of play. The No. 3 ranked Mounties then went 26 of 30 from the free throw line while outscoring the top-ranked Senators 28-9 to pull away for the victory.

Alexis Jennings finished with 28 points and 19 rebounds to lead Sparkman on the night.
