DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Ankeny’s police chief is defending the department’s handling of a recent house raid in connection to an alleged credit card theft case.

Chief Gary Mikulec said at a news conference Wednesday that the search at a Des Moines house on Jan. 31 included officers with body armor and rifles because it was important to be cautious. He says officers believed suspects inside the house could have access to guns.

Mikulec also says authorities knew the house had surveillance cameras, a factor that affected how officers entered the property.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1fIvoev ) two people inside the house were arrested. Residents of the home have criticized the department’s actions as excessive.

Mikulec says six people in the alleged credit card theft case face 14 felony charges.
