SHREWSBURY, Mass. (AP) - A Georgia man has been arrested in the slaying 40 years ago of a young Massachusetts woman.

Lonzo Guthrie, 69, of Austell, Ga., was arrested Tuesday in the death of Eileen Ferro, 21, of Shrewsbury, a spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/1eUTuPn ). Ferro was found fatally stabbed at her home Feb. 22, 1974.

Spokesman Tim Connolly said state police investigators from Early’s office went to Georgia to question Guthrie after DNA evidence linked him to Ferro’s slaying. Connolly said Guthrie was arraigned in Georgia on a fugitive charge and was fighting extradition to Massachusetts to face a murder charge. It couldn’t be determined Wednesday if he has a lawyer.

The newspaper reported that Georgia records show Guthrie is registered in that state as a sex offender because of an earlier rape conviction in California.

Ferro’s sister, Nancy Donnelly of North Brookfield, Mass., said her family was elated by the arrest.

“You can’t imagine living with this for 40 years,” she told the Telegram & Gazette. “I thought I was going to my grave not knowing. Both my parents did. I am sure they are looking down smiling.”
