ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that more than 28,000 new apartments in 2,000 buildings were added to the rent-stabilization rolls for tenants seeking affordable housing.

Since its inception in February 2012, the state Tenant Protection Unit conducted random audits of building owners who failed to register residential properties, as required by law, and sent subpoenas to owners who did not comply.

Cuomo said Tuesday that more than $220,000 has been returned through settlement agreements to tenants who were unknowingly overcharged by building owners.

Kings County has reported the highest number of apartments and buildings added to the rent-stabilization list, adding more than 1100 buildings and more than 9500 units.
