SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - An Illinois congressman wants to spark education in his district through an app competition.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren on Tuesday announced the competition designed to engage students in science, technology, engineering and math. He says sparking students’ interest in these fields is important for the nation.

Last December, Hultgren learned computer code alongside other students. Now Hultgren says he’s excited to see what students create. He says he hopes to see apps that “solve everyday problems and enhance our lives.”

Students will have the opportunity to meet with educational partners throughout the competition. The partners will help students create their apps.

Winning apps from each district will be displayed on the House of Representatives website and in the U.S. capital.

The competition runs from now until Apr. 30.
