GOWANDA, N.Y. (AP) - Three guards are recovering from injuries following a confrontation with inmates inside a western New York prison.

The Department of Corrections says Thursday that a sergeant and two corrections officers were treated and released following the incident Wednesday at the Gowanda Correctional Facility. The medium-security prison is about 30 miles south of Buffalo.

Authorities say it started in a shower area about 8:30 p.m. and involved nine inmates, who now face possible criminal charges.

The corrections officers union says the two officers had concussions and other injuries, while the sergeant was less seriously hurt. The union says a third officer also had minor injuries.

The inmates have been transferred to another prison and the incident is under investigation.
