Pekin issues more than 500 parking ban tickets

- Associated Press - Friday, February 7, 2014

PEKIN, Ill. (AP) - A published report says police in the central Illinois community of Pekin have this year issued more than 500 tickets and dozens of tows for vehicles that continue to be parked on streets after heavy snowfalls.

The (Pekin) Daily Times (http://bit.ly/1kloIqp ) reported that police had issued 504 tickets through Thursday afternoon. Each ticket costs $100.

Officials at City Hall say it is the city's second citywide parking ban. The ban prohibits parking on major streets that are designated snow routes, which means vehicles left on curbs are targets for tickets.

City Manager Joe Wuellner says the rules were publicized when the latest ban began earlier this week. He and others say it's a matter of safety.

City officials are encouraging residents to stay informed with more weeks of winter ahead.
