FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The University of Arkansas has named NFL assistant coach Robb Smith as the Razorbacks' new defensive coordinator.

Smith spent the past season as linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent the previous 14 years as a college assistant - including defensive coordinator at Rutgers and at Maine and as assistant head coach at Maine.

He succeeds Chris Ash at Arkansas. Ash left last month for Ohio State where he will be co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema announced the hiring of Smith in a news release on Saturday - saying Smith will bring "an attacking defensive philosophy" to UA.
