- Associated Press - Wednesday, January 15, 2014

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Former Connecticut Secretary of the State Miles Rapoport will lead Common Cause, a national, nonprofit advocacy group that focuses on increasing citizen engagement in politics and government.

A Democratic state representative from West Hartford for 10 years and a 1st Congressional District candidate who lost a close 1998 primary to now-U.S. Rep. John Larson, Rapoport is currently president of Demos. It is a New York-based public policy organization that advocates for "an equal chance in our economy."

He is scheduled to begin his new job overseeing the national Common Cause organization on March 10.

Rapoport replaces Bob Edgar, who died suddenly last April after serving six years as the organization's president. Edgar was a former Pennsylvania congressman and college president.
