HANDY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Southeastern Michigan authorities have charged a 24-year-old and his girlfriend in the opiate poisoning death of the man’s 3-year-old niece.

The Livingston County Press & Daily Argus of Howell (http://bit.ly/1h5K0nu ) says that Jared K. Brock and 22-year-old Chelsie L. Marme were charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse.

Court records say that Brock and Marme were caring for Brock’s niece Aug. 31 at his mother’s home in Handy Township when the child apparently swallowed a Suboxone pill that belonged to Brock. Suboxone is a synthetic opiate used to treat addiction.

Authorities say Marme told investigators friends advised her to take the child to the emergency room, but she didn’t do so.

Marme and Brock face court proceedings to take away their 7-month-old son. Neither has a listed phone.
