MEXICO CITY (AP) - Toluca defeated Pumas 2-0 on Sunday to move into first place in Mexico’s top division, while Cruz Azul won 1-0 against Chiapas on Saturday to improve to second after three rounds of matches.

Atlante overcame Atlas 1-0 in Saturday’s relegation battle, while reigning champion Leon fell 1-0 to America, also on Saturday.

In other results this weekend, Pachuca won 2-1 against Tijuana, Monterrey beat Queretaro 3-1, Veracruz drew 1-1 with Chivas, Morelia defeated Tigres 2-0 and Santos Laguna tied 0-0 with Puebla.

Paraguayan Pablo Velazquez controlled and poked the ball into the net in the 31st minute to hand Toluca the lead, with Miguel Ponce adding the second in the 62nd against a struggling Pumas side.

Mauro Formica steered in Cruz Azul’s winner from close range in the 27th.

Atlante closed the gap in the relegation league to five points after defeating Atlas, with Narciso Mina sliding the ball into the goal in the 64th.

Raul Jimenez won and converted a penalty for America in the 67th.

Second-half goals from Ecuadorians Enner Valencia and Walter Ayovi handed Pachuca the victory, after Christian Pellerano had put Tijuana ahead in the sixth.

Brazilian Willian opened the scoring for Queretaro in the 33rd, with Victor Ramos, Marlon de Jesus and Cesar Delgado all scoring for Monterrey in the second half.

Chivas took the lead against Veracruz in the 21st, when Israel Castro drove a volley into the net. Veracruz equalized in the 58th through Jehu Chiapas.

Duvier Riascos headed in Morelia’s first in the 43rd, with Carlos Morales adding the second five minutes after halftime.

Santos Laguna dominated against Puebla, but couldn’t finish the chances it created.
