Omaha plant explosion leaves 2 dead, others critically injured

- The Washington Times - Monday, January 20, 2014

Two people are dead and a handful of others critically injured after an explosion and partial building collapse at a Nebraska animal feed processing plant.

A total of 10 people remained hospitalized after the incident at the International Nutrition plant, and interim Omaha Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said the mission had changed from a rescue to a recovery effort by mid-afternoon, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

Mr. Kanger said that 38 people were at work at the time of the accident.

"It was a very dangerous situation and continues to be very dangerous," he said.

Family members who have gathered outside the livestock and poultry feed plant said they had received calls from their loved ones inside who told them one or two people may be trapped, the Associated Press reported.

Kari Cook received a text at 10:09 a.m. from her boyfriend, a shift supervisor, that said, "Major accident. I'm hurt and trapped. Love you."
