CHICAGO (AP) - The chief of Cook County’s health system is returning New York City to work with newly elected Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Cook County Health and Hospitals System CEO Dr. Ram Raju will lead the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation as its president. He worked there previously. His wife and family still live in New York.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s office announced the move Tuesday. Preckwinkle says she’s grateful for Raju’s leadership.

Raju led the county’s efforts to expand Medicaid coverage a year ahead of the Affordable Care Act, bringing in new federal revenue.

The Cook County health system's board of directors will oversee the selection of Raju’s successor. The board is expected to appoint an interim CEO and start a search soon.
