FREEPORT, Maine (AP) - Officials say fires at two homes next door to each other in Freeport over the weekend were caused by the same thing -food left cooking on the stove.

Other than that, the accidental blazes Sunday and Monday on Ware Road are unrelated.

Chief Darrel Fournier says crews responded to the first fire at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. No one was home at the time.

A second mobile home about 400 to 500 feet away went up in flames at about 6:30 a.m. Monday. A woman and her two children escaped unharmed, but the family’s two dogs died. Their father had already left for work.

Fournier estimated damage to both homes at more than $100,000 and neither family has insurance.

The Red Cross is helping the families.
