RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The longtime mayor of Apex has resigned to take a top job at North Carolina’s Department of Transportation.
DOT announced Keith Weatherly’s new post as deputy secretary for legislative affairs and policy Wednesday, one day after he announced his resignation at an Apex town council meeting, effective Friday. Weatherly said Tuesday he was taking a new job but could not name it because an official announcement was pending.
He was first elected mayor in 1995 and led the Wake County town through a period of tremendous growth.
While mayor he worked full-time for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency and most recently in the office of House Speaker Pro Tempore Paul Stam. Weatherly will work with the General Assembly in his new job.
