Sumter considers land purchase near Shaw AFB

- Associated Press - Wednesday, January 22, 2014

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Sumter City Council is close to buying a nearly 700-acre tract along Thomas Sumter Highway to create a buffer near Shaw Air Force Base.

The Item of Sumter reported (bit.ly/1jz06Y5) that city attorney Eric Shytle told the council Tuesday that officials want to protect the base from encroachment and use the land for recreational opportunities.

Shytle says the city is working with the Conservation Fund and the purchase is to be made in the next 10 days. The price tag is expected to be close to $2 million, with most paid for by the Fund. He says the city expects to pay only about $25,000 for the contract costs.

Shytle says the city agrees with the Fund's environmental requirements and sees the land becoming an urban forest.
