PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Children's Defense Fund President Marian Wright Edelman is set ti deliver an annual social justice lecture at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Edelman is scheduled to give the Martin Luther King Jr. Series lecture Wednesday. The school says she'll give her perspective on the role visual artists can play in promoting equality and social change.

Edelman directed the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund office in Jackson, Miss., in the 1960s and was the first black woman admitted to the bar there.

Edelman later served as counsel for the Poor People's Campaign in Washington, D.C., which King began organizing before his assassination.

She also founded the Washington Research Project, a public interest law firm that served as the parent body of the Children's Defense Fund. That organization launched in 1973.
