Mitchell got the Avalanche on the scoreboard when his redirection eluded Ben Bishop with 1:27 left in the second and Barrie scored 30 seconds later to pull Colorado within one.

“We gave ourselves a real opportunity,” Mitchell said. “We ran out of time in the second period. If we had a little bit more time on the clock, we had all the momentum going our way. Give credit to them, they came out and played a solid third period.”

MacKinnon had one shot, won 55 percent of his faceoffs, and was plus-1.

“I can’t believe he’s 18,” Cooper said. “Pretty impresive kid.”
