BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. (AP) - The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the death of an 84-year-old man who was struck by a car while crossing a state highway in Battle Mountain.

The patrol identified the victim on Tuesday as Fred Mendenhall of Battle Mountain.

Trooper Jim Stewart says he was walking on the right shoulder of State Route 304 shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday when he decided to cross the roadway.

He was hit by an eastbound Toyota driven by 77-year-old Marvin Thomas of Battle Mountain.

Mendenhall was transported to the Battle Mountain Hospital, where he later died.
