German Chancellor Angela Merkel fractured her pelvis during a ski trip to Switzerland, her spokesman said to reporters in Berlin on Monday.

USA Today reported that spokesman Steffen Seibert said Ms. Merkel “suffered bruising in connection with a partial fracture on her left posterior pelvic ring.” He also said that “we believe she was going at a low speed.”

Ms. Merkel was cross country skiing when the accident occurred, Mr. Seibert said, in USA Today.

She has canceled several scheduled official appointments for the next few weeks. But she would continue to hold Cabinet meetings and lead Germany in crucial matters, her spokesman said.

The injury actually occurred during Ms. Merkel’s Christmas break, but she thought it was simply a bruise. She returned to Berlin and had doctors look at it, though. On Monday, they released their diagnosis.
