CHICAGO (AP) - Marcel Pearson was to be in Macomb attending freshman orientation at Western Illinois University.

However, the 17-year-old was fatally shot this week while playing basketball in Chicago’s Washington Heights neighborhood, the victim of the random gun violence that has plagued the city in recent days.

Western Illinois President Jack Thomas says school officials were “shocked and saddened” when they learned of Pearson’s death late Tuesday. The teen was to attend freshman orientation Thursday.

Pearson was a member of the first graduating class of Johnson College Prep High School. He averaged 17 points per game on the school’s basketball team. Coach Stephen Gilbert said he was a captain his junior and senior year, and hoped to make Western Illinois’ basketball team.

No arrests have been made in Johnson’s death.
