PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s attorney general says a local fire board in Coventry violated the state’s Open Meetings Law on numerous occasions last year.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1rWQaf9 ) The Central Coventry Fire District Board of Directors can be fined up to $2,000 unless it can show those violations were not willful.

The attorney general’s office began investigating after receiving a complaint.

They found the board failed to file minutes in a timely manner, went into executive sessions without explaining why, and discussed matters in closed session that should have been talked about in front of the public.

The board had argued it was under control of a state court receiver, and believed it was an agent of the Superior Court and not bound by the Open Meetings Law.
