GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - Police and animal rescue workers have removed almost 80 cats from a Gilbert home.

Gilbert police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Sanger says the house was foreclosed and was sold last week. Police say the new homeowners discovered dozens of cats on Monday when they checked on the house.

The Arizona Republic reports (http://bit.ly/1p96Q2y) that police were notified, and they found 79 cats in filthy conditions. Sanger says more than 30 cats were removed just from the garage.

Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and the Arizona Humane Society rounded up the cats. Sanger says healthy cats will be placed in new homes. The cats’ conditions were not available.

Police say the previous homeowner, 59-year-old Jean Whitaker, was not arrested, but she could face animal abuse charges.
