Tennessee Tech coach Watson Brown is known for his offensive innovation, and he has some plans to use Darian Stone in a new hybrid “QW” quarterback-wing position.

Brown wants the senior to show off his versatility on the wing by joining sophomore quarterback Jared Davis in the backfield. Stone had team highs for the Golden Eagles by throwing for 1,008 yards and running for 523 yards. Davis threw for 935 yards himself last fall.

Tennessee Tech is coming off a 5-7 season, though the Golden Eagles finished the season with two straight wins. The Golden Eagles also don’t have to play a Big Ten team like Wisconsin last season.

Five things to watch from Tennessee Tech:

SEASONED SENIOR: Free safety Marty Jones ranked third in the OVC with 98 tackles in 2013 and begins his sixth season due to injuries. He already has earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s, and is working on a third degree.

TOUGH STUFF: Five of the Golden Eagles’ 11 FCS opponents are projected in the Top 25 nationally in a number of preseason rankings: OVC foes Tennessee State, Eastern Illinois and league favorite Jacksonville State; Northern Iowa; and Southern Conference co-champ Chattanooga.

PILING UP: Middle linebacker Tra’Darius Goff made a team-high 101 tackles as both a sophomore and junior. He is the first Golden Eagle with back-to-back 100 tackle seasons since 2002.

THREE DECADES: Brown enters his 30th season as head coach and his eighth with Tennessee Tech.

ROUGH ROAD: Tennessee Tech goes more than a month without a home game after opening vs. Kentucky Christian Aug. 28. The Golden Eagles don’t have any home games in September. Murray State visits Oct. 4.
