TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Filmmaker Michael Moore has donated $250,000 to launch an independent movie program based in Traverse City.

The Travers City Record-Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/1rErCXD ) Moore plans to start a weekly movie night when smaller films will be simulcast to 300 theaters across the U.S. and Canada.

The Traverse City Film Festival co-founder says he will curate the non-profit “Mike’s Movie Night.” He says he will select independent, documentary and foreign films that don’t usually play in multiplexes.

It will operate like the Metropolitan Opera’s broadcast of performances to movie theaters across the country.

Moore says the money is the last of $1 million he set aside in a nonprofit account after his 1989 documentary “Roger and Me.” Warner Brothers paid him $3 million for the film.
