BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Brookhaven voters have approved a 2 percent tax hotel tax to pay for tourism promotion.

The Daily Leader reports (http://bit.ly/1mfFtUo ) the tax was approved by 73 percent of voters, according to complete, but unofficial, returns from Tuesday’s election.

The tax will be imposed on overnight stays at hotels or bed-and-breakfast inns with six or more rooms.

City officials say the tax could generate $100,000 to $120,000 a year for tourism advertising and marketing and could be used for projects such as bicycle paths and walking trails.
