NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The University of New Orleans has received a grant of nearly $99,000 from the Louisiana Board of Regents to create a materials science laboratory.

University officials say the lab will give students hands-on experience with energy and electronic materials.

Using the grant, a research team consisting of three physicists, a materials scientist and a chemist will purchase equipment to set up 15 experiments in which students will fabricate materials and devices and study their structure and properties.

Physics professor Leszek Malkinski is the grant’s principal investigator.

The new lab course associated with the grant will be first offered in fall 2015.

Materials science is a relatively new field that applies the properties of matter to various areas of science and engineering.
