ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - A 50th anniversary celebration of the University of Michigan Transplant Center is underway in Ann Arbor.

Two twin sisters who participated in Michigan’s first kidney transplant were planning to be on hand for Sunday afternoon’s event.

Janice Ottenbacher Schroeder and Joan Ottenbacher Teltow were expected to join more than 500 people at Crisler Center to mark the milestone.

The event is running from 1 to 5 p.m.

The identical twins were 15 in 1964 when they underwent the transplant at the university hospital. Teltow was the donor and Schroeder the recipient.

The center has performed about 10,000 organ transplants, more than 1,000 of which were for pediatric patients. It’s one of the nation’s oldest and largest transplant centers.
