ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Boyett rallied from off the pace to win the $60,000 feature by three-quarters of a length at Santa Anita on Thursday.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Boyett ran a mile on the turf in 1:34.98 and paid $13.80, $6.60 and $3.60.

Avare returned $12 and $6.20, while Jules Journey was another length back in third and paid $2.40 to show.

Boyett showed a different dimension from his front-running style. Baze took the 4-year-old gelding off what was expected to be a a fast pace going into the clubhouse turn and stayed there.

“We took him back but nobody went to the lead,” trainer Mark Glatt said. “I was a little concerned since they were walking on the front-end, but Tyler was able to get him in a great position and rode him perfect.”

The victory, worth $36,000, increased Boyett’s career earnings to $158,466, with four wins in 13 starts.

“I just let him be the boss,” said Baze, who rode Boyett for the first time. “I just got along with him and kept him happy. He’s more of a grinder, so I didn’t want to move too soon and have him get tired. We hit the turn and we were out of there.”
